Intercession for a Nation – A Leader’s job
Written by on January 7, 2014
This is a writing I did a long ago for Delta Psi Epsilon Christian Sorority, Inc, of which I am a member. I wrote this piece, as in various organizations, I saw leadership complaining about their members, employees, families, etc. We as leadership hold a hard role, to lead and represent, but to also be servants to those in our organizations. We means we can be abused, misused, lied on and mistrusted; but we need to allow God in all circumstances deal with the people and allow integrity, meekness, and character through Christ to show.
The Israelites in the Old Testament were not strangers to God’s power. They have seen the visible glory of God descend and manifest on the top of Mt. Sinai. This large group, nation, heard the audible voice of God speaking to them from the fire. Hearing God’s voice caused them to quake and tremble in holy fear. Finally, Israel’s leaders begged Moses, their leader, that no further words be uttered directly to them by God. Moses agreed, and ascended the mountain and remained in God’s presence for forty days. (Exodus 19:17-20:19; 24:18)
While on the mountain, the same people who knew their God was real, began to rebel. They made themselves a golden calf, similar to the Egyptian gods. They did this in full view of the glory of God. (Exodus 31:1-8) Any organization without its leader for long periods of time, will always find another. It will set its own direction, which may be contrary to the mission and vision of the organization.
Leadership Void
There is a saying that “Nature abhors a Vacuum.” This phrase is attributable to Aristotle. It is based on his conclusion that nature requires every space to be filled with something, even if that something is colorless, odorless air. The same principle is at work in our spiritual lives of our organizations. When God has placed a leader over an organization, and that leader refuses to execute the role, or abdicates the role; a vacuum is created. It ends up just as bad as or worse than before; unless that position is filled as God desires.
Leadership Intercession
As leaders, we also have the job of covering our organizations, whether secular or not, in prayer. A measure of divine grace and forgiveness is reserved in God’s heart and is tapped into by intercession. Just as Moses reminds God of His promises for Israel as well as His relationship with Israel’s forefathers; Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Exodus 32:11-13).
Remember, the assignment is to bring an imperfect people with a promise from God into fulfillment. The leader’s role is to lead and pray from the beginning of that journey, through the valleys of sin and setbacks, and continue until the promise from God is obtained.
You may be a pastor of a church, or an intercessor, CEO, manager, or a parent. Regardless, whoever you are praying for, you must have this attitude: “Lord, I am not letting You alone concerning my loved one.”
